Het is alsof ze hebben afgesproken dat het afgelopen moet zijn met het hulpverleningsgehannes en de begripsverwarring rond kindermishandeling: het Britse artsenblad The Lancet en emeritus hoogleraar inzake kindermishandeling Baartman.
Vier forse artikelen in The Lancet analyseren de weerstand tegen ‘werk maken van kindermishandeling’ – niet alleen bij artsen – en tegelijkertijd ontleedt Baartman de begripsmatige wanorde rond de term ‘kindermishandeling’. Gelijk op met meer aandacht voor het onderwerp, kreeg de term namelijk meer betekenissen. Baartman haalt de kernbetekenis weer naar voren: dat ouders hun kind niet goed behandelen.
